CURATED VINTAGE WATCHES

Gruen Techni-Quadron

INQUIRE

Here’s a very rare Gruen Techni-Quadron “Doctor’s Watch” from the early 1930s. For the time period, this watch was highly practical—the large seconds and slim rectangular case allowing doctors to easily check their patient’s pulse. This piece also has incredible horological significance, as the US market counterpart to the legendary Rolex Prince, both sharing the Aegler (Alpina-Gruen) manufactured caliber 877. The case is beautifully adorned with art deco motifs on the flanks with heat-blued wonderfully rendered like an antique clock. Altogether, this is an incredible piece of medical horological history that is equally at home on the wrist of a historian as a physician.

Founded in 1894 by German-born watchmaker Dietrich Gruen, the Gruen Watch Company rose to become one of the most prominent watch manufacturers in the early 20th century. Based in Cincinnati, Ohio, the firm combined American casing and timing with high-quality Swiss movements, bridging Old World craftsmanship and New World industrial ambition. In 1925, the brand introduced the rectangular Quadron, moving away from traditional round pocket-watch forms. A decade later, Gruen unveiled the Curvex, a curved movement shaped to fit the wrist. It was unusual yet practical, quickly becoming the watch the company was best known for.

Gruen stands as a defining chapter in American watchmaking history, celebrated for marrying technical ingenuity with interesting design. Once a major player in the U.S., the original company struggled and ultimately folded during the quartz revolution of the 1970s. Today, Gruen’s mechanical watches are prized by collectors for their craftsmanship, elegance, and the transatlantic vision that shaped them.
